Minister of Defense Sjafrie Sjamsoeddin has publicly addressed the ongoing military trial concerning the violent assault on KontraS activist Andrie Yunus. Emphasizing the integrity of the judicial process, Sjafrie pledged that the military court remains committed to upholding the principles of justice throughout the proceedings.
The TNI Military Police Center has officially identified four suspects, all members of the TNI Strategic Intelligence Agency (BAIS). The Military Court II-08 Jakarta is scheduled to commence the prosecution trial for the four defendants this Wednesday, May 20.
During a working meeting with Commission I of the House of Representatives on Tuesday, May 19, Sjafrie highlighted the severity of the charges. “Currently, we have a high-ranking officer serving a life sentence. When addressing cases involving chemical attacks, the potential for even harsher sentencing exists,” he stated, reinforcing that military tribunals do not discriminate based on rank when presiding over misconduct.
Despite the gravity of the allegations, the case has sparked debate regarding the defendants’ fitness for service. Previously, the TNI Psychology Center (Puspsi) suggested that the four individuals could potentially remain in the military. Colonel Arh Agus Syahrudin, Head of the Development Division at Puspsi TNI, testified during a court session on May 7 that a psychological evaluation conducted on March 19, 2026, indicated the defendants maintained sufficient cognitive capacity to fulfill their duties.
“Our data shows that the capacity of these four defendants remains within a normal range. Even if their condition is not optimal, they are capable of maintaining their standards as TNI members,” Agus explained to the court. However, he acknowledged that the assessment did reveal high levels of aggression among the suspects. He noted that while such aggression was detected, the military could theoretically adjust their future deployments, as a certain level of assertiveness is expected of service members.
The four individuals named in the planning and execution of the attack are Sergeant Second Class Edi Sudarko (ES), First Lieutenant Budhi Hariyanto Widhi (BHW), Captain Nandala Dwi Prasetyo (NDP), and First Lieutenant Sami Lakka (SL). As the trial moves forward, the military justice system faces continued scrutiny regarding how it handles accountability for those charged with severe violence against human rights defenders.
Summary
Minister of Defense Sjafrie Sjamsoeddin has reaffirmed the military’s commitment to justice in the trial concerning the assault on KontraS activist Andrie Yunus. The Military Court II-08 Jakarta is set to prosecute four suspects from the TNI Strategic Intelligence Agency (BAIS), with officials warning that the court may impose severe penalties regardless of the defendants’ military ranks.
Although the TNI Psychology Center testified that the four suspects—Edi Sudarko, Budhi Hariyanto Widhi, Nandala Dwi Prasetyo, and Sami Lakka—possess sufficient cognitive capacity for service, the evaluation also identified high levels of aggression. As the trial proceeds, the case continues to draw scrutiny regarding military accountability for violence directed against human rights defenders.
