Rancak Media – Former women’s singles world number one, Nozomi Okuhara, faced an unexpected early exit at the Korea Masters 2025, despite arriving at the tournament on an impressive winning streak.
Nozomi Okuhara was widely tipped to make a deep run at the Korea Masters 2025, entering the competition as a formidable contender experiencing a remarkable surge in form.
The one-time World Champion had built significant momentum, clinching titles in her last three consecutive tournaments leading up to this event.
Okuhara’s recent triumphs included victories at the Kaohsiung Masters, the Malaysia Super 100, and the Indonesia Masters II, all prestigious tournaments at the BWF Tour Super 100 level.
Okuhara’s illustrious career has been marked by significant ups and downs, primarily due to a series of persistent and recurring injuries.

Indeed, the current year did not begin favorably for her.
A string of early-round defeats saw her world ranking plummet outside the top 60, making it challenging to secure entry into the elite BWF World Tour-level events.
However, her recent winning spree rekindled hopes for the full resurgence of the diminutive yet formidable player, often described as “small but spicy” for her fierce on-court presence.
“The real challenge starts now,” Okuhara had posted on her Instagram account, acknowledging the road ahead.
Her three consecutive titles, culminating at the Indonesia Masters II, had propelled her ranking to World No. 31, a comfortable position that granted her eligibility for all levels of open tournaments.
“Higher-level tournaments will be tough battles, but I intend to overcome them one by one,” she further stated, outlining her ambitious outlook.
Unfortunately, in her much-anticipated return to a World Tour-level event after a considerable hiatus, Okuhara suffered a premature defeat at the Korea Masters 2025.
Okuhara was bested by her compatriot, Hina Akechi, in a second-round encounter held at the Wonkwang University Cultural and Sports Center in Iksan, South Korea, on Thursday, November 6, 2025.
Akechi, who is of the same generation as Indonesia’s Ester Nurumi Tri Wardoyo, decisively defeated her senior in just 36 minutes, securing a convincing 21-17, 21-17 victory.
Hina Akechi was arguably not the most anticipated player to halt Okuhara’s impressive unbeaten run.
This surprise upset was particularly notable given their head-to-head record, which previously saw Okuhara claiming victory in all five of their prior encounters.
In fact, Okuhara’s recent three consecutive titles included a win against Akechi in one of the rounds, notably in the final of the Kaohsiung Masters 2025.
Nonetheless, Okuhara’s improved ranking offers a silver lining, securing her a spot in the main draw of the Kumamoto Masters 2025 (Super 500), which will be held in her home country.
The prestigious Kumamoto Masters Japan 2025 tournament is scheduled to take place in Kumamoto, Japan, next week, from November 11-16, 2025.
Meanwhile, Okuhara was not the sole seeded player to experience an early exit at the Korea Masters 2025.
Sharing a similar fate was Huang Yu-Hsun of Taiwan, the seventh seed, who was eliminated by local favorite Park Ga-eun in the second round with a score of 21-13, 21-11.
Earlier, in the first round, the third seed, Sung Shuo Yun from Taiwan, was stunned by young Indonesian talent, Ni Kadek Dhinda Amartya Pratiwi.
Kadek Dhinda secured her upset victory in three tightly contested games, with a final score of 17-21, 21-10, 21-19.
The 19-year-old continued her surprising campaign by overcoming another higher-ranked opponent, Tung Ciou-Tong of Taiwan.
Against Tung, Dhinda emerged victorious with scores of 21-16, 15-21, 21-12, setting up a quarterfinal clash against Park Ga-eun at the Korea Masters 2025.
