Long-Distance Running Legend Triyaningsih Wins Mangkunegaran Run 2026

Indonesian long-distance running legend Triyaningsih left her mark on the Mangkunegaran Run 2026. Widely celebrated as the queen of Southeast Asian long-distance running, she secured first place in the open female category at the event, which was supported by strategic partner Permata Bank.

For Triyaningsih, racing is about more than just winning; it is about the simple joys that make the experience memorable. This was exactly how she felt while competing in the event organized by Katadata and the CNC Foundation in Solo on May 3, 2026.

“I really enjoyed this run because the weather was perfect. It was overcast and not too hot, and the course was flat. For those looking to set a personal best, this is the race to do it,” Triyaningsih shared with Katadata.co.id.

Triyaningsih crossed the finish line in 21 minutes and 14 seconds. However, her victory in the 5K category was a unique milestone in her career. Fresh off competing in the Berlin Half Marathon last month, she chose this shorter distance as part of her transition period. Even for a seasoned athlete with 11 SEA Games gold medals, preparation is non-negotiable. “I still had to prepare specifically for this race because, as a long-distance runner, you must respect every distance,” she added.

While Solo is a familiar city to her, this year’s Mangkunegaran Run was special as it marked her debut in the event. “Usually, my schedule clashes with other events, but I was determined to make this one a priority,” she explained.

A highlight of the weekend was the recognition she received from the Pura Mangkunegaran, which she views as a meaningful validation of her long journey as an athlete. She was honored by Kanjeng Gusti Pangeran Adipati Arya Mangkunegara X, known as Gusti Bhre, during a royal dinner the night before the race. “I am truly happy that my hard work is appreciated. This serves as a new momentum to further introduce the sport of running to a wider audience,” she noted.

Looking ahead, Triyaningsih hopes the Mangkunegaran Run becomes a permanent fixture. She praised this year’s execution and expressed her desire to see the event evolve to offer a distinctive identity that makes Solo not just a destination for runners, but a place they long to return to. “I hope it leaves a lasting impression on everyone’s hearts, even while maintaining its strong cultural heritage,” she said.

The Mangkunegaran Run served as the grand finale for the 269th anniversary of Pura Mangkunegaran, held from May 1 to 3, 2026. The event attracted approximately 7,700 participants across the 5K, 10K, and half marathon distances.

Gusti Bhre emphasized that the course was officially certified by World Athletics to ensure safety and precision. The certification process was overseen by World Athletics representative Kim Vivan, who traveled to Solo to inspect the route. “This certification ensures the distance is accurate and the surface is safe for reducing injury risks. It is essential for validating world records and official athlete times,” Gusti Bhre stated during a press conference in Jakarta.

Beyond the competition, the Mangkunegaran Run was designed to be more than a ceremony. It aimed to bridge the gap between sports, culture, and social interaction, creating a shared experience that is accessible to all members of the community.
