Hylo Open 2025: Putri KW Narrowly Misses Title, Focuses on Indian Opponent

Indonesian Shuttler Putri Kusuma Wardani Maintains Championship Hopes at Hylo Open 2025, Reaches Semifinals

Indonesian women’s singles star, Putri Kusuma Wardani, has once again emerged as a weekend favorite, delighting fans after a challenging start to her European tour where her initial two tournaments did not go as smoothly as hoped.

The Hylo Open 2025 presents a significant opportunity for the World Championship bronze medalist. This BWF World Tour Super 500 event saw Putri enter as the top seed, a prestigious position she has diligently defended throughout the tournament.

Putri secured her spot in the semi-finals after a hard-fought victory against Keisha Fatimah Azzahra, an Indonesian player representing Azerbaijan. The match, held at Saarlandhalle in Saarbruecken, Germany, on Friday (31/10/2025), saw Putri triumph in straight games with a score of 21-18, 21-19.

Following her challenging quarter-final encounter, Putri shared her sentiments in a statement released by PBSI (Indonesian Badminton Association): “Alhamdulillah (Thank God), I am grateful for this victory in what was not an easy match.” She acknowledged her opponent’s strong performance, adding, “Keisha played quite well; she possesses a powerful smash that made things difficult for me. I definitely felt a bit of pressure.”

Despite the pressure, Putri’s focus remains sharp. “I am happy to reach the semi-finals, but it’s not over yet. My focus is entirely on tomorrow’s match. I need to maintain a stronger mindset to perform at my absolute best,” she added, emphasizing the mental fortitude required for the upcoming challenges.

Putri’s resolve is crucial as she prepares for a tougher opponent in the semi-finals. Prior to the quarter-finals of the Hylo Open 2025, the PB Exist alumna had primarily faced competitors ranked outside the world’s top 80.

The Hylo Open 2025, being held at the tail end of the European tour and not classified as a mandatory tournament for elite players, attracted a relatively smaller field of top-ranked participants, which contributed to a more open draw.

In the semi-final clash, Putri Kusuma Wardani will be challenged by India’s Unnati Hooda, currently ranked 34th in the world. Hooda is certainly not an opponent to be underestimated, despite her young age.

The 18-year-old Indian prodigy, fresh from competing in the 2025 Junior World Championships in her home country, has already demonstrated her formidable capabilities. Notably, Hooda caused a major upset last July at the China Open Super 1000, defeating her seasoned compatriot, Pusarla Venkata Sindhu, en route to a quarter-final appearance.

Meanwhile, the other women’s singles semi-final will feature an all-Danish showdown between Mia Blichfeldt and Line Christophersen, ensuring a European finalist from that half of the draw.

Putri now stands just two victories away from a significant new achievement in her burgeoning career. Her previous best title triumphs have been at the Super 300 level, including her last victory at the Korea Masters 2024.

Only one other Indonesian women’s singles player, Gregoria Mariska Tunjung, has managed to secure a title at an event equivalent to the Super 500 or higher level in recent times. Gregoria, affectionately known as Jorji, achieved this remarkable feat at the Kumamoto Masters Japan 2023, where she decisively defeated China’s formidable Chen Yu Fei with scores of 21-12, 21-12 in the final.

The semi-finals of the Hylo Open 2025 are scheduled to commence on Saturday (1/11/2025), starting at 18:00 WIB (Western Indonesian Time).
