With no hospitals or alternative clinics available, the modest Puskesmas stands as the sole beacon of hope for the local community, tasked with meeting the fundamental healthcare needs of 823 residents with the support of only ten staff members.
During a visit on Saturday, May 9, Cefrilia highlighted the severity of the human resource shortage, noting, “We are severely understaffed; we only have one midwife on site.” This lack of personnel is compounded by logistical hurdles in the medical supply chain. While pharmaceuticals are shipped monthly from Melonguane, the capital of the Talaud Islands Regency, the distribution is often misaligned with the facility’s actual needs. Frequently, the center receives excess supplies of unnecessary items while facing critical shortages of essential medicines.
Emergency medical care presents an even greater obstacle. Many conditions cannot be treated locally, necessitating referrals to the Mala Regional General Hospital in Melonguane. However, these transfers are entirely dependent on unpredictable transportation options. Pioneers ships can take up to ten days to arrive, and flights are limited to twice a week, with both modes of transit heavily reliant on favorable weather conditions. To make matters more dire, the facility still lacks basic medical necessities, including a reliable supply of oxygen.

Her plea to the central government is both simple and urgent: she is calling for facility upgrades, a consistent supply of essential medicine, and an increase in medical personnel.
