IHSG Outlook: Limited Gains Expected Amid Rupiah Volatility and Shifting Global Sentiment

JAKARTA — The Jakarta Composite Index (JCI) is expected to trade with limited movement in the coming week. Investors are navigating a complex landscape shaped by global sentiments, the depreciation of the Indonesian Rupiah, and the lingering effects of the MSCI index rebalancing.

Analysts at Phintraco Sekuritas project that the JCI will likely trade sideways within the 6,000 to 6,300 range. This outlook follows the index’s resilience in absorbing selling pressure throughout the MSCI rebalancing process, which concluded at the end of May 2026.

In Friday’s session (May 29), the JCI closed slightly lower by 0.05 percent to 6,127.38. The market had shown early promise, briefly climbing to the 6,230 level before experiencing a late-session correction.

Phintraco Sekuritas noted that the selling pressure resulting from the removal of specific stocks from the MSCI index was less severe than market participants had initially feared. In fact, some of these assets even managed to record significant gains, suggesting that investors had largely priced in the rebalancing event, leading to more controlled selling activity.

On the international front, market sentiment has been buoyed by a rally in Asian indices, mirroring a strong performance by technology stocks on Wall Street. The upward momentum in the US tech sector serves as a positive catalyst for regional markets, providing a buffer against heightening geopolitical tensions between the United States and Iran.

Furthermore, a dip in global crude oil prices has helped alleviate investor anxiety regarding inflationary pressures on a global scale.

Despite these external positives, the domestic market remains overshadowed by the weakening Rupiah. During Friday’s spot trading (May 29), the currency hit a low of Rp17,881 per US dollar, a factor that continues to constrain the JCI’s potential for short-term growth.

Sectorally, healthcare stocks bore the brunt of the market volatility, falling by 1.49 percent. Conversely, the infrastructure sector emerged as a key pillar for the index, posting a robust 2.89 percent gain throughout the trading week.

Looking ahead, market participants are advised to closely monitor foreign fund flows, the stability of the Rupiah, and global developments, particularly concerning Middle Eastern geopolitics and the trajectory of US interest rate policies.

If external pressures subside and the Rupiah regains stability, the JCI has the potential to test the 6,300 resistance level once again. Conversely, should foreign selling persist alongside a weaker currency, the index risks drifting toward its psychological support level at 6,000.

Summary

The Jakarta Composite Index (JCI) is projected to experience limited movement, trading sideways between 6,000 and 6,300 in the upcoming week. While the market successfully absorbed selling pressure from the recent MSCI index rebalancing, growth remains constrained by the depreciation of the Indonesian Rupiah against the US dollar. Investors are currently balancing these domestic challenges against positive regional sentiments and the robust performance of global technology stocks.

External factors, including declining global crude oil prices, have provided some relief against inflationary concerns despite ongoing geopolitical tensions. Market participants are advised to closely monitor foreign fund flows, currency stability, and shifts in US interest rate policies to gauge future trends. The index may test the 6,300 resistance level if external pressures ease, though a failure to stabilize could see it test support at the 6,000 level.
