Rancak Media – Minister of Finance Purbaya Yudhi Sadewa has revealed significant progress in the strategic acquisition of PT Permodalan Nasional Madani (PNM), which is set to transition from Bank Rakyat Indonesia (BRI) to fall under the direct purview of the Ministry of Finance (Kemenkeu).
During a media briefing held at the Ministry of Finance Office in Central Jakarta on Monday, May 11, Purbaya confirmed that the Ministry has already secured the crucial “green light” from the Daya Anagata Nusantara Investment Management Agency (BPI Danantara). This approval marks a pivotal step in designating PNM as a Special Mission Vehicle (SMV) under Kemenkeu, aligning with the government’s broader economic strategies.
“PNM is currently in discussions with Danantara, and we have already received the green light,” Purbaya stated, underscoring the positive momentum of the high-stakes transaction.
Furthermore, Purbaya elaborated on a key component of the PNM acquisition process: an upcoming exchange of business entities. As part of this arrangement, PT Geo Dipa Energi (Persero), currently one of Kemenkeu’s Special Mission Vehicles, will be placed under the management of Danantara Indonesia. This strategic swap is designed to facilitate the smooth transfer of PNM while optimizing the oversight of other state-owned entities.

The State Treasurer expressed an initial desire for both PNM and Geo Dipa Energi to retain their SMV status under the Ministry of Finance. However, Purbaya noted that Danantara did not endorse this dual arrangement. “It appears there will be an exchange with Geo Dipa. I had hoped for both, but they did not permit it,” he candidly explained, highlighting the complexities involved in inter-agency negotiations.
While Purbaya refrained from specifying an exact completion date for the acquisition, he assured that the takeover process would be finalized as swiftly as possible. He acknowledged that the full implementation of PNM’s new status as an SMV directly under Kemenkeu would require considerable time, emphasizing the detailed operational adjustments needed.

Nonetheless, Purbaya expressed confidence that the necessary approvals from Danantara Indonesia for the Ministry’s plan would be secured within this year. He further clarified the immediate timeline, stating, “The acquisition target is as soon as possible. While implementation will take time, the approval itself will be finalized within these two months.”
Under Minister Purbaya’s leadership, the Ministry of Finance envisions a transformative future for PT Permodalan Nasional Madani. The Ministry intends for PNM to evolve into an official institution for distributing People’s Business Credit (KUR) under the existing Special Vehicles of Kemenkeu, such as PT SMI or PIP. Ultimately, Purbaya’s long-term vision is for PNM to become a dedicated Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprise (MSME) Bank, significantly bolstering financial inclusion and support for small businesses across Indonesia.
Summary
The Indonesian Ministry of Finance has secured approval from the Daya Anagata Nusantara Investment Management Agency (BPI Danantara) to designate PT Permodalan Nasional Madani (PNM) as a Special Mission Vehicle (SMV). To facilitate this transition, PT Geo Dipa Energi will be transferred from the Ministry of Finance to Danantara as part of a strategic exchange. Although the dual management of both entities under the Ministry was initially desired, the current arrangement requires this swap to proceed.
The acquisition process is expected to be finalized within the next two months, though full operational adjustments will take more time. Ultimately, the Ministry intends to utilize PNM as an official institution for distributing People’s Business Credit, with a long-term goal of transforming the company into a dedicated bank for Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises. This restructuring aims to enhance financial inclusion and support for small businesses throughout the country.
