BI Injects IDR 36.38 Trillion into Green Financing: Opportunities for Banks & Investors

Rancak Media – Bank Indonesia (BI) is steadfastly committed to fortifying sustainability practices and accelerating the transition towards a robust green economy. Central to this endeavor, BI employs macroprudential policies to provide significant incentives to banks that channel financing into sustainable sectors. This strategic initiative is a cornerstone of BI’s broader vision to cultivate a national financial system that is more environmentally conscious and profoundly supportive of long-term sustainable development.

Senior Deputy Governor of BI, Destry Damayanti, highlighted the substantial impact of these policies, noting that by November 1, 2025, BI had already disbursed a remarkable Rp36.38 trillion in macroprudential incentives to the banking sector. Beyond incentivizing banks to aggressively pursue green financing, BI is also actively championing the growth of environmentally friendly businesses. This includes providing comprehensive support to 159 green Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) through business development programs and facilitating crucial business matching for financing, ensuring the expansion of this vital green business sector.

Complementing its monetary policies and incentive programs, BI has innovated further by developing the “Kalkulator Hijau” (Green Calculator). This standardized tool empowers economic actors to accurately estimate emissions from various economic activities, providing a measurable benchmark for reducing greenhouse gas emissions. “All these policies and initiatives are meticulously crafted to underpin sustainable and inclusive development,” stated Destry in Bali on November 23rd, underscoring the holistic nature of BI’s approach.

BI’s commitment to green policies extends to tangible actions for carbon emission reduction and offsetting. Demonstrating this, BI has proactively purchased 150 tons of CO₂e carbon credits and embarked on an extensive program to plant 37,000 trees across diverse regions of Indonesia. This impactful initiative, as Destry explained, engages all BI Regional Representative Offices, fostering a collective effort to significantly contribute to carbon emission reduction nationwide.

Furthermore, BI is actively strengthening public and corporate understanding of carbon credits, recognizing this mechanism as a pivotal instrument in the green economic transition. A carbon credit serves as a verifiable certificate representing the absorption or avoidance of one ton of CO₂e greenhouse gas emissions. These credits are awarded to projects demonstrably reducing emissions, such as renewable energy installations and reforestation efforts. Companies can procure these carbon credits through the Indonesia Stock Exchange, effectively offsetting their own generated emissions.

The concept of carbon offsetting is also being broadly promoted to businesses and the wider community as a practical method to mitigate their carbon footprint stemming from economic activities and daily consumption. Through this comprehensive combination of strategic policies, dedicated mentorship, targeted incentives, and concrete environmental actions, Bank Indonesia envisions a national financial ecosystem that is increasingly adaptive to sustainability principles. Ultimately, this holistic approach aims to foster an inclusive and competitive green economy for Indonesia’s future.
