Bank Indonesia (BI) has identified Indonesia’s youth as the primary driving force behind the widespread adoption of the Quick Response Code Indonesian Standard (QRIS). This digital payment system is particularly popular among Generation Z, who account for nearly 28% of total users, and millennials, comprising approximately 26%.

As of July 2025, BI data reveals a remarkable 162.7% year-on-year growth in QRIS transactions, solidifying its status beyond a mere alternative payment method. For young people, QRIS has seamlessly integrated into their daily lives, becoming an essential tool for everything from transportation and food orders to online shopping and various payments. This significant trend was a key highlight at the 2025 Festival Ekonomi Keuangan Digital Indonesia (FEKDI), an event themed “Synergy and Innovation for the Acceleration of Indonesia’s Digital Economy and Finance Transformation,” which brought together regulators, industry players, and digital ecosystem stakeholders.

During a discussion session, BI Governor Perry Warjiyo underscored Indonesia’s rapid ascent as one of the fastest-growing nations in digital economic and financial sectors over the past five years.

“Currently, QRIS is utilized by nearly 60 million users and embraced by over 40 million merchants, predominantly micro, small, and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs),” stated Perry in Jakarta on Friday, October 31. He further emphasized, “QRIS can truly be called a symbol of state sovereignty.”

The sheer volume of digital transactions, encompassing online banking, mobile banking, and QRIS usage, has reached an astounding 13 billion transactions, valued at nearly IDR 60 thousand trillion. Recognizing this momentum, Perry urged, “Therefore, let us synergize—government, private sector, and the public—to continuously advance digital payment systems and financial digitalization across Indonesia.”

Echoing this collaborative spirit, OVO Chief Operating Officer Eddie Martono affirmed OVO’s strong commitment, alongside Grab Indonesia, to supporting BI’s initiatives aimed at expanding QRIS adoption across various on-demand services. He highlighted the tangible impact of QRIS integration within the Grab application, where users can conveniently scan the QRIS code displayed by driver-partners, thereby facilitating broader access to digital payment options.

Since its launch in 2025, Eddie revealed that millions of users monthly conduct transactions using QRIS across the entire Grab ecosystem, including services like GrabBike, GrabCar, GrabFood, and GrabMart. It’s important to note that beyond QRIS, all Grab services continue to accept other payment instruments, ensuring users retain flexibility in their daily payment preferences.

Martono further pointed to the popularity of an innovative payment tool: the OVO Nabung by Superbank rek-wallet. “This innovative service seamlessly merges the functionalities of a savings account with the flexibility of a digital wallet,” he explained. “Users can utilize their stored balance for daily transactions while automatically earning savings interest, much like a traditional bank account.”
