SEA Games 2025: Women’s Volleyball Schedule, Expectations, and Potential Players

The Indonesian national volleyball team is carrying high hopes as the multi-sport Southeast Asian Games make their return with the SEA Games 2025. The indoor volleyball tournament is scheduled to take place from December 10-19, 2025, at the Indoor Stadium Huamark in Bangkok, Thailand.

A stark contrast in performance history shapes the expectations for Indonesia’s men’s and women’s national volleyball teams. While one side boasts a formidable track record, the other faces considerable challenges that necessitate a strategic overhaul.

The men’s volleyball team is currently on a stellar run, having secured an impressive three consecutive gold medals at the SEA Games in 2019, 2021, and 2023. Led by star player Rivan Nurmulki, the squad is even poised to replicate an earlier golden era when Indonesia clinched four consecutive golds at the SEA Games from 1987 to 1993. Consequently, the roster for the men’s national training camp, or Pelatnas, shows minimal changes, reflecting confidence in the established core. Prominent names like Rivan Nurmulki, Boy Arnez, Hendra Kurniawan, Dio Zulfikri, and Fahreza Rakha Abhinaya are among the 18 players called up.

Indonesia’s men’s team has been drawn into Group B, alongside the Philippines, Cambodia, and Myanmar. The Philippines emerges as the primary threat, having recently showcased a strong performance as host of the 2025 World Championship. “I think the Philippines is also a good team,” stated men’s national volleyball coach, Jeff Jiang Jie, to BolaSport.com recently. “The Philippines played in the World Championship last month. They played five sets with Iran and almost won. Playing against them could be very difficult. It’s not an easy task, but we will try to defeat them all,” he added, acknowledging the formidable challenge ahead.

Conversely, the senior women’s national volleyball team finds itself in a precarious position, with their performance over the last two years raising significant concerns. Despite the presence of star player Megawati Hangestri Pertiwi, Indonesia finished at the bottom of the SEA V League in both 2024 and 2025, consistently losing to Thailand, Vietnam, and the Philippines.

In response to these struggles, the Indonesian Volleyball Federation (PBVSI) has implemented a different strategy by appointing a foreign coach for the women’s national team, Marcos Sugiyama. Marcos is tasked with blending experienced veteran players with promising junior talents who have demonstrated excellent form at the U-21 World Championship 2025 and the Asian Youth Games 2025. This strategic shift is evident in the composition of the senior women’s team called to the national training camp, which features a significant influx of young players.

Only six senior players received a call-up: Megawati Hangestri Pertiwi, Mediol Stiovanny Yoku, Ersandrina Devega, Rika Dwi Latri, Yolana Betha Pangestika, and Arneta Putri Amelian. The remaining twelve players are promising talents under 20 years old, underscoring the team’s youth-focused rebuilding efforts. Among them are two players who were key figures for Marcos at both the U-21 World Championship and the Asian Youth Games: Syelomitha Afrilaiza Injilia Wongkar (OH) and Chelsa Berliana Nurtomo (MB).

“I believe these players have great talent and will be the backbone of the Indonesian senior team in the future,” Marcos Sugiyama remarked after the Asian Youth Games. “I see Indonesian volleyball beginning to develop its own playing identity, similar to the Japanese style but with a distinct Indonesian character,” Marcos admitted. The Japanese-Brazilian coach further emphasized, “The challenge now is to maintain discipline and consistency.”
