PT Telkom Indonesia Tbk (TLKM) is taking significant strides towards its ambitious net zero emission target by 2060, a commitment underlined by the strategic conversion of several of its power plants to utilize solar energy. This proactive approach highlights Telkom’s dedication to sustainable operations and environmental stewardship.
Highlighting these efforts, Ahmad Reza, SVP Group Sustainability and Corporate Communication at Telkom Indonesia, announced at the Trend Maker Summit 2025 in Bali on Friday (28/11) that a substantial portion of their power infrastructure now relies on eco-friendly sources. “Currently, approximately 9,559 gigajoules, equivalent to 324 kWh, of electricity is generated using solar panels. This demonstrates that a significant part of our power plants now harnesses environmentally friendly energy,” Reza explained, underscoring the tangible impact of their energy transition initiatives.
Telkom’s journey towards Net Zero Emission (NZE) by 2060 is guided by a comprehensive roadmap that encompasses a diverse array of emission reduction activities. This holistic strategy extends beyond just solar power, integrating various innovative solutions to minimize their environmental footprint across all operations.
One notable initiative involves a robust circular economy approach to waste management, specifically targeting fiber optic waste. Telkom has implemented a program to reuse 80% of its fiber optic waste, efficiently recovering and repurposing the tin contained within these materials to maintain the same high quality for future applications. This not only reduces waste but also conserves valuable resources.
Further enhancing its sustainability efforts, Telkom is actively pursuing energy efficiency in its offices through the adoption of smart office schemes. This intelligent system optimizes energy consumption throughout the day; all equipment operates during morning peak hours, lighting is strategically focused during the afternoon, and all devices are programmed to automatically power down after office hours, significantly reducing unnecessary energy usage.
Looking ahead, Telkom is also planning to integrate clean energy solutions for its data centers, particularly for the facility located in Batam. Reza emphasized the critical importance of this move, stating, “This is essential because electricity is the lifeblood of any data center.” By powering these crucial hubs with renewable sources, Telkom aims to further reduce its carbon footprint in its most energy-intensive operations.
These combined efforts underscore Telkom’s unwavering commitment to creating a more sustainable future. Reza concluded with a forward-looking statement: “Our hope is that with increased environmental awareness, we will experience much greater energy efficiency in the future, benefiting both our operations and the planet.”
