Rancak Media, JAKARTA — Bank Indonesia (BI) has announced a significant development in financial access, revealing that the digital footprints generated by Quick Response Code Indonesian Standard (QRIS) usage can now serve as a foundational basis for credit scoring, particularly for micro, small, and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs). This innovative approach aims to enhance the eligibility assessment for loan disbursements to this vital economic sector.
Deputy Governor of BI, Juda Agung, explained that this advanced credit scoring framework is significantly bolstered by artificial intelligence (AI) technology. He expressed strong conviction that AI possesses immense potential to broaden financial access for the wider community. “Do not envision AI as a human-replacing robot. Instead, imagine AI as an exceptionally intelligent assistant, deeply understanding the needs of its users,” Juda articulated during the FEKDI & IFSE 2025 event in Jakarta on Saturday (1/11/2025).
Juda elaborated that AI technology is adept at processing the digital traces of financial transactions created through the use of digital payment systems like QRIS. This AI-processed data will then form the bedrock of an alternative credit scoring system. As an illustration, an MSME owner who actively uses QRIS will generate a digital trail encompassing details such as their income, expenditures, savings patterns, and even customer count.
“These digital financial footprints from an MSME operator can be transformed by AI into a pathway for financial access. When this individual requires a loan from a bank or from fintech lending platforms, these insights become what is often referred to as alternative credit scoring,” he affirmed.
This strategic move, Juda continued, aligns seamlessly with BI’s overarching policy direction to vigorously promote the digital transformation of payment systems and expand financial inclusion nationwide. He emphasized that true inclusive digitalization transcends merely possessing super chips or the most cutting-edge algorithms. Juda underscored the crucial importance of financial digital technology reaching and positively impacting the lives of those who need it most.
“Advanced technology is necessary, but it is not sufficient on its own. We require a paradigm shift. We do not just need high-tech solutions, but ‘right-tech’ or appropriate technology that truly serves its purpose,” he concluded.
