Tech giant Amazon has announced a massive 33 billion USD investment plan, equivalent to approximately 587.03 trillion Indonesian Rupiah, aimed at bolstering artificial intelligence (AI) infrastructure across Southeast Asia. This ambitious capital injection will focus on four key nations: Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, and Thailand.
“Amazon plans to invest more than 33 billion USD in Southeast Asia through 2039. We are building infrastructure, training the local workforce, and enabling businesses in the region to compete on a global scale,” stated David Zapolsky, Amazon’s Chief Global Affairs and Legal Officer, as reported by Business Today on Thursday (May 28).
According to Amazon’s economic impact assessment, this investment is projected to contribute over 64 billion USD to the combined Gross Domestic Product (GDP) of these four nations. Furthermore, the initiative is expected to support more than 56,300 full-time jobs annually within the local data center supply chain.

The report highlights that the ASEAN region is poised to become the world’s fourth-largest economy, with its digital economy reaching an estimated 560 billion USD by 2030. The company later introduced the Amazon.sg retail store in 2019. Currently, Amazon maintains AWS infrastructure in Singapore, Indonesia, Malaysia, and Thailand, with launches occurring in Indonesia in 2021, Malaysia in 2024, and Thailand in 2025.
The company currently employs over 3,000 staff members, with an additional workforce of more than 2,500 professionals across its diverse operations in Southeast Asia. Throughout 2025, Amazon has invested over 3 billion USD in infrastructure and employee compensation across its business lines, including AWS, Stores, Devices, and Entertainment.
Beyond physical infrastructure, Amazon is actively collaborating with governments and educational institutions to accelerate AI adoption and cultivate digital talent. This includes the AI Ready program, which offers over 30 free courses on AI and generative AI. Additionally, through the Amazon Global Selling initiative, thousands of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) across Southeast Asia are empowered to reach customers in over 200 countries and territories via Amazon’s global platform.
