Danantara Eyes Stake in Weda Bay as a Strong Local Partner

Rancak Media – Rosan Roeslani, CEO of Danantara Indonesia, has confirmed that the organization is actively exploring strategic investment partnerships across Indonesia, including the potential acquisition of stakes in foreign-owned companies. This commitment reflects Danantara’s mandate to serve as a cornerstone for national investment growth and economic development.

Addressing recent reports regarding a potential acquisition of a stake in the French mining firm Eramet at PT Weda Bay Nickel (WBN) in North Maluku, Rosan emphasized that Danantara is prepared to engage in any corporate action deemed strategic for strengthening national interests. Speaking at the Presidential Palace complex in Jakarta on Thursday (May 14), Rosan noted that Danantara is well-positioned to act as a strong local partner for global investors.

While discussions regarding a partnership with Eramet remain in the early stages with no definitive agreements finalized, Rosan confirmed that communication between the two parties is ongoing. “We are certainly open to discussions regarding investment opportunities in Indonesia,” he stated, reinforcing Danantara’s collaborative approach to business.

Danantara’s involvement is intended to bolster Indonesia’s influence in national strategic projects, particularly within the mineral resources and industrial downstreaming sectors. This strategic vision aligns with remarks made earlier in 2025 by Eramet Indonesia CEO Jerome Baudelet, who revealed that the company is exploring collaborative investment opportunities in the nickel sector alongside both Danantara and the Indonesia Investment Authority (INA).

The proposed collaboration seeks to establish an integrated investment platform covering the full nickel supply chain, from upstream mining activities to downstream processing. According to Danantara’s Chief Investment Officer (CIO) Pandu Sjahrir, this partnership is specifically designed to fortify the sustainable battery raw material ecosystem for electric vehicles (EVs) in Indonesia.

Under the proposed framework, Danantara and the INA are expected to provide long-term financing to support these capital-intensive investments. In return, Eramet will contribute its extensive technical expertise and experience in managing large-scale mining operations that adhere to rigorous international sustainability standards.
