The Financial Services Authority (OJK) has instructed PT Bank Negara Indonesia Tbk (BNI) to conduct a thorough internal investigation following a case of misappropriated funds from the congregation of the Aek Nabara Parish Church in Rantauprapat, North Sumatra. The funds, managed by a Credit Union (CU), amounted to Rp 28.25 billion.
Friderica Widyasari Dewi, Chairperson of the OJK’s Board of Commissioners, confirmed that BNI has successfully completed the full reimbursement of the congregational funds to the Aek Nabara Parish Church, totaling Rp 28.25 billion. The OJK is closely monitoring the verification and resolution process to ensure it remains transparent, fair, and compliant with prevailing regulations. Furthermore, the OJK has mandated BNI to undertake a comprehensive internal investigation.
“This includes a deeper examination of compliance aspects, internal controls, and governance,” stated Ms. Widyasari during the Monthly Meeting of the Financial Services Authority (RDKB) press conference in April 2026, held virtually on Tuesday (5/5).
Previously, BNI finalized the return of funds to the Credit Union (CU) of the Aek Nabara Parish on Wednesday, April 22nd. This final transfer of Rp 21.25 billion completed the earlier disbursement of Rp 7 billion.
Munadi Herlambang, Director of Human Capital and Compliance at BNI, affirmed that the fund return process is entirely concluded. “With this, the total funds returned have reached Rp 28,257,360,600, signifying the completion of the fund repatriation process,” Mr. Herlambang announced at a press conference held at Graha BNI on Wednesday (22/4).
He emphasized that this resolution was the result of collaborative efforts by various parties to ensure a smooth process and provide certainty to the affected depositors. He also extended apologies to the Catholic community, particularly the congregation of CU Paroki Aek Nabara, for any inconvenience caused.
“With the completion of these fund returns, we hope to maintain public trust. This event also serves as a collective learning experience for all parties. BNI remains committed to providing the best services to the people of Indonesia,” Mr. Herlambang added.
