President Prabowo Subianto has reaffirmed the government’s commitment to ensuring that informal sector workers, including ride-hailing drivers, receive comprehensive protection under the National Health Insurance (JKN) program managed by BPJS Kesehatan.
Addressing the crowd during the International Workers’ Day (May Day) 2026 commemoration at the National Monument on Friday, May 1, the President emphasized that the state must ensure accessible healthcare for all. He highlighted that informal workers, such as online motorcycle taxi drivers, face higher risks and deserve guaranteed security to maintain their productivity and well-being.
As a concrete step toward this goal, the government has issued Presidential Regulation Number 27 of 2026 regarding the Protection of Online Transport Workers. This mandate requires companies to provide social security, specifically BPJS Kesehatan coverage, to their driver-partners. President Prabowo described this policy as a reflection of the government’s dedication to expanding social protection coverage across the nation.
The President stressed that providing health insurance via JKN is a fundamental pillar for sustaining the economic stability of households that rely on informal sector income. He expressed his firm hope that national regulations will continue to guarantee justice and equity for all Indonesian citizens.
The impact of these efforts is becoming increasingly evident, with the number of JKN participants continuing to rise. As of April 1, 2026, the number of registered active workers and their families has reached over 36.4 million people, demonstrating the nation’s strengthened commitment to providing inclusive healthcare for every segment of the workforce.
BPJS Kesehatan President Director, Prihati Pujowaskito, echoed this commitment, underscoring the organization’s dedication to expanding coverage for informal workers. To achieve this, BPJS Kesehatan has previously collaborated with PT GoTo Gojek Tokopedia Tbk, ensuring that online transport workers receive sustainable health protection in accordance with the new government regulations.
Pujowaskito emphasized that BPJS Kesehatan is prepared to collaborate with all stakeholders to improve access to healthcare services for all Indonesians. He noted that by integrating workers into the JKN program, they can operate with greater peace of mind, safety, and comfort, knowing they are protected should they fall ill.
