PT Pertamina Patra Niaga has marked a significant stride in Indonesia’s energy transition, successfully executing two inaugural liftings of the new B50 biofuel. This pivotal development underscores the nation’s commitment to bolstering energy independence and sustainability. The initial lifting saw 4,600 kiloliters (KL) of B50 dispatched from the Kasim Refinery to the MT Krasak on July 18, 2026. This was swiftly followed by a second major shipment on July 22, 2026, where the Plaju Refinery supplied an impressive 8,230 KL of B50 to the Integrated Terminal (IT) Palembang. These strategic movements are crucial steps in establishing a robust supply chain for the innovative fuel across the archipelago.
Following these successful liftings, the newly blended B50 biofuel is being efficiently distributed to Public Fuel Filling Stations (SPBUs) strategically located across Indonesia. This widespread distribution covers both the western and eastern regions of the country, ensuring that the benefits of this advanced fuel reach a broad spectrum of consumers. The national implementation of B50 was officially launched by President Prabowo Subianto on July 9, 2026, setting the stage for this ambitious energy program.
The B50 biofuel represents a cutting-edge advancement in diesel fuel technology. Before these crucial liftings commenced, Pertamina Patra Niaga undertook rigorous preparatory measures to ensure the seamless and compliant implementation of B50. This comprehensive approach involved meticulous checks on facility and infrastructure readiness, stringent product quality control processes, and unwavering adherence to safety protocols. Once the blending process is complete, the B50 fuel undergoes thorough testing in specialized laboratories. Only after passing these rigorous quality checks is the B50 deemed ready for further distribution to Fuel Terminals, from where it is then supplied to the extensive network of SPBUs nationwide. She projected that B50 would generate substantial “multiplier effects” across the national economy. A key benefit is the significant saving in foreign exchange, achieved through a reduction in diesel imports. This lessens the country’s economic vulnerability to global oil price fluctuations and strengthens its balance of payments. “This program is also expected to contribute significantly to the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions, further decreasing our dependence on imported fuel,” Kitty added, underscoring the dual benefits of economic stability and environmental stewardship.
The Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM) has confirmed the rapid rollout of B50 across Indonesia. According to the Ministry, Pertamina has already commenced the distribution of B50 biofuel at 57% of its managed Public Fuel Filling Stations (SPBUs). This widespread availability marks a significant achievement in the program’s initial phases. Data from the Directorate General of Oil and Gas reveals that Pertamina Patra Niaga managed an extensive network of 13,603 SPBUs as of the first quarter of 2025, illustrating the vast reach of this initiative.
Eniya Listiani Dewi, the Director General of New, Renewable, and Energy Conservation (EBTKE), provided an update on the progress. “B50 is already available at 57% of Pertamina SPBUs,” she stated during an interview in Karawang, West Java, on Thursday, July 9, 2026. She noted that this distribution spans various key regions across Indonesia, including the populous islands of Java and Sumatra, as well as parts of Sulawesi. Specific areas like Cikampek, Surabaya, and Jakarta have already transitioned fully to B50, with distribution having commenced in some locations as early as July 1, 2026.
Despite the official launch and ongoing distribution, Eniya also clarified that a transition period is in place until September 30, 2026. This allows for the orderly depletion of existing B40 fuel stocks held by various fuel business entities, encompassing both Pertamina and private operators. Pertamina, as the largest SPBU operator in Indonesia, is projected to deplete its remaining B40 stock within a two-month timeframe. Conversely, the 34 private businesses involved in B50 blending will require approximately three months to exhaust their B40 inventories, highlighting the logistical complexities of a nationwide fuel transition.
Regarding the required volume of FAME, the primary molecule in biodiesel, Eniya explained that a definitive figure for the end of the year is still being finalized. Currently, the Ministerial Decree from the ESDM sets the FAME volume for B50 within a flexible range. “The calculation is between 16.7 and 18 million kiloliters; this figure is continuously evolving,” she remarked. Eniya emphasized that while the minimum volume projected is 16.7 million kiloliters, exceeding this target would be highly beneficial for the program’s success and the nation’s energy security objectives. This substantial demand for FAME underscores the immense potential for Indonesia’s palm oil industry to contribute significantly to the country’s renewable energy landscape and reduce its carbon footprint.
