BALIKPAPAN – Bank Indonesia (BI) Balikpapan is actively accelerating the adoption of cashless parking systems across Balikpapan, East Kalimantan, as part of a broader push toward digital transformation in the city’s public services.
Following the successful implementation of digital payment systems in the Balikpapan Permai (BP) district, authorities plan to expand this initiative to several other key locations, with a particular focus on high-traffic areas such as local markets. Robi Ariadi, Head of the BI Balikpapan Representative Office, emphasized that shifting to cashless parking significantly enhances management efficiency and transparency.
Looking ahead to 2026, BI Balikpapan has set a strategic target to integrate at least five new parking locations into the digital payment network. By prioritizing areas with high parking turnover, such as traditional markets, the initiative aims to modernize infrastructure and streamline daily urban operations.
“Our goal is to have a minimum of five designated parking points throughout the city operating with cashless systems, with a special emphasis on markets. Once the Balikpapan Permai project is fully solidified, we will begin replicating the model in other strategic locations,” Ariadi explained to TribunKaltim.co on Wednesday (13/5/2026).

Despite the clear benefits, transitioning to a digital-first parking environment is not without its hurdles. The implementation team is currently navigating challenges related to user readiness and the integration of robust banking systems. Furthermore, there is an ongoing need for extensive public outreach and education.
According to Ariadi, many traders and local citizens remain accustomed to traditional cash transactions and require guidance to comfortably adapt to digital platforms. He remains optimistic, however, that as these payment systems become more accessible and intuitive, they will eventually become a seamless part of the daily routine for Balikpapan residents.
“Ongoing education is vital. Many of the registered merchants still require guidance as they are not yet fully accustomed to digital workflows,” he concluded.
Summary
Bank Indonesia Balikpapan is actively expanding its cashless parking initiative to modernize public services, targeting the integration of five additional high-traffic locations by 2026. This strategy follows the successful pilot program in the Balikpapan Permai district, which serves as a model to improve operational transparency and efficiency. The project primarily focuses on busy traditional markets to modernize urban infrastructure and streamline daily operations.
Despite the strategic benefits, authorities face challenges regarding user readiness and the need for robust banking integration. Officials are currently prioritizing public outreach and education to help traders and residents transition from traditional cash transactions to digital platforms. Bank Indonesia remains optimistic that ongoing guidance will ensure that these digital systems become a seamless part of the daily routine for the local community.
