The Indonesian government has successfully distributed its Free Nutritious Meal Program (MBG) to an impressive 49 million beneficiaries. This monumental undertaking is equivalent to providing daily food assistance to more than seven times the entire population of Singapore, underscoring the vast scale of the initiative.
President Prabowo Subianto affirmed that the MBG distribution has reached numerous remote and isolated regions across the archipelago. He lauded this achievement as one of the most significant logistical accomplishments globally in recent years, demonstrating Indonesia’s capacity for large-scale social welfare programs.
“Today, 49 million beneficiaries receive meals every day. We are feeding more than seven times the population of Singapore daily,” Prabowo declared during his address at the 61st anniversary celebration of the Golkar Party, held at Istora Senayan Jakarta on Friday, December 5th. His remarks highlighted the immediate and widespread impact of the program.
The Chairman of the Gerindra Party further asserted that Indonesia’s efforts in delivering the MBG program are considerably more progressive compared to food aid initiatives in other nations. Prabowo cited Brazil as an example, noting that it took 11 years for the South American nation to reach 40 million beneficiaries. In contrast, he stated, “We achieved 49 million beneficiaries within just 12 months,” showcasing the rapid implementation and reach of the program.
Prabowo emphasized that the MBG program is instigating tangible change within communities, particularly benefiting children who previously had limited access to nutritious meals. “Observe the faces of these children, those who perhaps never ate well, now they joyfully welcome the arrival of the MBG,” Prabowo remarked, painting a vivid picture of the program’s positive social impact.
However, the ambitious rollout faces challenges. Dadan Hindayana, Head of the National Nutrition Agency (BGN), projected that the comprehensive target of 82.9 million MBG recipients is now expected to be completed by February 2026 at the latest. This revised timeline marks a shift from the initial goal of distributing the MBG to all recipients by December of the current year.
“We are striving for February at the latest. Nevertheless, we are confident that we can still catch up [by year-end], depending on the intensity of disruptions encountered,” Dadan stated following a Plenary Cabinet Meeting at the Merdeka Palace, Jakarta, on Monday, October 20th. His comments reflect the agency’s determination amidst operational hurdles.
Dadan elaborated that several obstacles are contributing to the potential adjustment in the MBG distribution timeline for the 82.9 million recipients. While refraining from detailing every issue, he mentioned that current challenges are impacting both the distribution of MBG packages and the crucial verification processes.
“Now, it’s not only ground operations; even our aerial systems are beginning to experience disruptions. When our system is affected, verification automatically becomes hampered. So, these are the types of disturbances we are continuously working to overcome,” Dadan explained, underscoring the complexities involved in managing such a vast and vital program.
Summary
The Indonesian government’s Free Nutritious Meal Program (MBG) has successfully reached 49 million beneficiaries, a figure exceeding seven times Singapore’s population. President Prabowo Subianto lauded this as a significant global logistical accomplishment, highlighting its rapid implementation in just 12 months compared to similar programs in other nations. The initiative delivers crucial nutritious meals, particularly benefiting children in numerous remote regions.
However, the ambitious MBG program faces challenges in reaching its comprehensive target of 82.9 million recipients. The National Nutrition Agency now expects to achieve this goal by February 2026, revising the initial year-end target. Obstacles affecting both distribution and verification processes, including disruptions to ground and aerial systems, are contributing to this adjusted timeline.
