Former West Java Governor Ridwan Kamil underwent over six hours of questioning by the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) on Tuesday, December 2nd. The politician, often referred to as RK, vehemently denied any involvement in the alleged corruption case concerning advertising procurement at Bank BJB, officially known as PT Bank Pembangunan Daerah Jawa Barat dan Banten Tbk.
“Fundamentally, and most importantly, I had no knowledge whatsoever of what is being referred to as this advertising fund case,” RK stated after his examination at the KPK’s Red and White Building on Tuesday, December 2nd. He emphasized that the corporate actions undertaken by Bank BJB, as a Regional-owned Enterprise (BUMD), fell outside the primary duties and functions (tupoksi) of the Governor. According to Kamil, “The corporate actions of this BUMD are carried out by their own technical personnel, as per the Governor’s main duties.”
Kamil further elaborated that a governor would only be aware of a BUMD’s corporate actions if a report was submitted. Such reports, he explained, typically come from the board of directors, the commissioners acting as supervisors, or the Head of the West Java Provincial BUMD Bureau. “None of these three provided any reports during my tenure as governor. Therefore, if asked, I genuinely don’t know, much less was I involved, or did I benefit from the results,” Ridwan Kamil asserted.
In response to questions regarding several items seized by the KPK, including a Royal Enfield motorcycle and a Mercedes-Benz car, RK clarified that these vehicles were acquired using his personal funds. “All the seized items that have been widely reported were purchased with personal funds. So, there is no connection whatsoever with the case in question,” he stated firmly.
Kamil, accompanied by his legal counsel, arrived at the KPK Red and White Building in Jakarta around 10:40 AM Western Indonesian Time (WIB) and concluded his examination at approximately 4:30 PM WIB.
Meanwhile, the Director of Investigation at the KPK, Asep Guntur Rahayu, had previously stated that RK served as a commissioner for Bank BJB during his term as West Java Governor. “Every first-level regional government has its own bank. And subsequently, the governor becomes a commissioner there,” Asep told reporters on Tuesday, April 22nd. Based on this, Asep believes that RK, in his capacity as commissioner, should have been aware of the bank’s activities. This particular aspect will be thoroughly explored by the anti-graft agency in their investigation into RK’s alleged involvement in the case.
The KPK has already named five individuals as suspects in the Bank BJB advertising corruption case. These include Yuddy Renaldi, the CEO of Bank BJB; Widi Hartoto, the Commitment Maker and Head of the Corporate Secretary Division at BJB. Also implicated are Ikin Asikin Dulmanan, who controlled the Antedja Muliatama and Cakrawala Kreasi Mandiri agencies; Suhendrik, controller of BSC Advertising and Wahana Semesta Bandung Ekspress agencies; and Sophan Jaya Kusuma, controller of Cipta Karya Sukses Bersama.
