Padang Rising: 3,327 Tons of Waste Cleared After Floods

 

The Padang City Government in West Sumatra has initiated a comprehensive cleanup operation and scheduled the management of a staggering 3,327 tons of post-flood disaster waste. This immense volume of debris is scattered across various locations, and the ambitious cleanup is slated for completion within an intensive nine-day period.

“Despite the very large volume, not all material needs to be transported to the Final Processing Site (TPA),” stated Fitra Masta, Head of the Padang City Environmental Agency (DLH), speaking in Padang on Monday, December 1st. This pragmatic approach highlights a strategic effort to manage the immense burden efficiently.

According to Fitra, the monumental 3,327-ton waste accumulation comprises several components: a five-day operational backlog, disaster-specific waste originating from affected residential areas, and a substantial quantity of large logs carried downstream from river sources during the floods.

A significant portion of this post-disaster waste burden consists of these logs, which alone are estimated to weigh around 1,100 tons. However, the DLH has confirmed that the actual volume of wood requiring transport is projected to be less than half of this amount, thanks to proactive management strategies.

Waste Transformed into Alternative Raw Material

Fitra elaborated that communities in coastal areas are actively engaged in collecting and utilizing this wood. This includes small business owners who are effectively repurposing it as fuel for their production needs, fostering local resilience and resourcefulness.

“We are striving to ensure that not all wood waste ends up at the TPA. In addition to being utilized by the community, a substantial portion will be channeled to PT Semen Padang to be used as alternative fuel,” he explained, underscoring a multi-pronged strategy for waste diversion.

From the very first day of post-disaster recovery efforts, personnel from the Waste Management Agency and local waste banks have implemented direct sorting processes in the field. This immediate segregation allows a significant amount of material to be instantly reused or recycled, effectively applying the core principles of reduce, reuse, recycle (3R) from the outset.

This innovative strategy not only significantly alleviates pressure on the existing waste transport fleet but also expedites the overall normalization of essential services. More broadly, this approach ensures that post-disaster handling is not merely swift, but also exceptionally efficient and deeply environmentally conscious, setting a benchmark for sustainable recovery.

By rigorously optimizing the reuse of materials, Fitra is confident that the nine-day target for completing the post-disaster waste cleanup will be successfully met. Currently, the mobilization of fleets is continuously being scaled up, with handling zones meticulously divided to ensure that every affected area receives structured, measurable, and timely attention.

“All these comprehensive steps are being undertaken to guarantee that Padang City’s recovery progresses rapidly, without ever compromising the fundamental principles of sustainability in waste management,” he concluded, emphasizing the city’s commitment to a green and resilient future.
