The Pertamina Eco RunFest 2025, held on Sunday, November 23rd, at Istora Senayan, went beyond a typical running event with its inspiring theme, “Energizing The Unity.” This annual gathering aimed not only to promote physical activity but also to passionately encourage the community to adopt sustainable and environmentally friendly lifestyles, particularly through effective waste management that transforms discarded materials into valuable resources.
To realize this vision, PT Pertamina (Persero) forged a significant collaboration with Waste4Change, a pioneering company renowned for providing responsible, end-to-end waste management solutions. This strategic partnership ensures an environmentally sound approach, contributing directly to the ambitious goal of Zero-Waste Management.
During the event, Pertamina offered participants a unique, hands-on educational experience in waste management. Attendees were actively guided through the practical process of sorting organic, inorganic, and residue waste. A dedicated team of “rangers” from Waste4Change consistently circulated throughout the area, diligently collecting waste from participants and offering guidance.
Adding an element of fun and engagement, participants at Pertamina Eco RunFest 2025 also had the opportunity to dispose of their waste in creatively designed, basketball hoop-shaped bins strategically placed across various locations. This innovative approach transformed a mundane task into an interactive experience.
Pandu Priyambodo, Lead Marketing & Partnership at Waste4Change, expressed profound gratitude for the renewed partnership with Pertamina Eco RunFest, marking their second successful collaboration.
“We are incredibly thankful and grateful to Pertamina for this ongoing collaboration,” he remarked. “This remarkable event attracts a huge following and serves as a significant educational platform, fueling our enthusiasm to educate all participants on sustainable practices.”
Following the event, all collected waste and various materials are meticulously transported to Waste4Change’s state-of-the-art Material Recovery Facility (MRF). Here, they undergo a detailed and rigorous process of further sorting and preparation for subsequent stages of recycling and recovery.
Specifically, organic and inorganic waste streams are carefully separated for appropriate recycling or composting, while residual waste is innovatively processed to be repurposed as alternative fuel, minimizing landfill impact.
Further enhancing the educational aspect, dedicated educators circulated amongst attendees, engaging them with unique games while imparting vital knowledge about the negative impacts of waste, different waste types, and responsible management strategies. This interactive approach actively encouraged visitors to partake in conscious waste disposal.
Drawing on the valuable lessons from the previous year’s event, the Pertamina Eco RunFest 2024 successfully managed approximately 9.8 tons of waste, exemplifying a true “Zero Waste to Landfill” concept. For 2025, the organizers expressed optimistic hopes to replicate and even surpass this impressive achievement.
The presence and initiatives of Waste4Change were particularly well-received by participants, including the couple Fachri and Grimaldy. They enthusiastically joined a Waste4Change workshop where they learned to craft beautiful, fragrant candles from used cooking oil, showcasing practical upcycling.
According to Fachri, he and his family were drawn to the workshop because it represented a tangible program that genuinely embodies Pertamina’s core spirit of Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle (3R), emphasizing practical efforts to transform existing waste into reusable resources.
“We participate in Pertamina Eco RunFest every year,” Fachri shared. “This year has been exceptionally exciting, always evolving and never boring, especially with the introduction of innovative workshops like this one.”
Beyond comprehensive waste management, Pertamina also curated creative recycling classes focusing on plastic, textile, and organic waste. Visitors were further inspired by various captivating art installations crafted from recycled materials, serving as a powerful blend of creative expression and environmental education.
Arya Dwi Paramita, Corporate Secretary of PT Pertamina (Persero), underscored the public’s crucial role in environmental stewardship at the event. He emphasized that all collected waste and discarded materials would be meticulously processed to create new, value-added products, reinforcing the principles of a circular economy.
“In line with the theme of Pertamina Eco RunFest 2025 today, ‘Energizing the Unity for Sustainable Living,’ we aspire to inspire society not only to engage in running but also to acquire invaluable experiences and knowledge that empower them to embrace a truly sustainable lifestyle,” Arya concluded, encapsulating the event’s broader mission.
As a leading company in the energy transition, Pertamina remains steadfast in its commitment to supporting Indonesia’s Net Zero Emission 2060 target. This dedication is evident through its continuous promotion of programs that directly contribute to the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). These comprehensive efforts are seamlessly integrated with the rigorous implementation of Environmental, Social & Governance (ESG) principles across all of Pertamina’s business lines and operations.
