PT Solusi Sinergi Digital Tbk (WIFI), operating as Surge, through its subsidiary PT Telemedia Komunikasi Pratama, has unveiled its “Internet Rakyat” (People’s Internet) service, bringing 5G technology to various regions across Indonesia, including Maluku and Papua. This groundbreaking initiative offers consumers unlimited internet access for 30 days at an affordable price of just Rp 100,000, delivering speeds of up to 100 Megabits per second (Mbps).
According to Telemedia’s official website, the Internet Rakyat service leverages 5G Fixed Wireless Access (FWA) technology and is built on an Open Radio Access Network (Open RAN) architecture, operating within the 1.4 GHz frequency band. This innovative combination of technologies is designed to enable the provision of high-speed internet networks that can reach a wider geographical area without the need for extensive fiber optic cable infrastructure, making digital connectivity more accessible than ever before.
Prospective users will also benefit from significant cost savings, as there are no installation fees or modem rental charges. Furthermore, an enticing offer of a free subscription for the first month is available, further lowering the barrier to entry for many Indonesian households and businesses. This new offering represents a substantial upgrade from Telemedia’s previous internet packages, which included options for seven days (Rp29,000), 14 days (Rp49,000), and 30 days (Rp79,000), underscoring a commitment to enhanced value and performance.
The launch of Internet Rakyat is a result of a strategic collaboration between Surge and Orex SAI Inc., a joint venture formed by two global technology giants, NTT DOCOMO and NEC Corporation. The Indonesian government, through the Ministry of Communication and Digital (Komdigi), has also actively supported this vital initiative, recognizing its potential to bridge the digital divide.
“Fast internet should not be exclusively enjoyed by a select few regions. Through this collaborative effort, we are committed to providing equitable access to all members of society,” stated Deputy Minister of Komdigi, Nezar Patria, following the commercial contract signing between Surge, Orex SAI Inc., and local distributors, as quoted in an official release on Wednesday, November 12. This sentiment highlights the national importance of the project in fostering inclusive digital growth.
The service primarily targets communities that stand to gain the most from improved internet access, including micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs), remote educational institutions, and telehealth services in underserved areas. This focus aims to empower local economies and enhance essential services across the archipelago.
Currently, the Internet Rakyat service is available in several locations across Java, Maluku, and Papua. Last October, Komdigi announced that Surge had successfully won the auction for the 1.4 GHz frequency band, designated for Broadband Wireless Access (BWA) services in Regional 1. This region is critical, encompassing over 60% of national broadband subscribers, with 56.1% located in Java and 4% in Maluku-Papua, indicating Surge’s strategic positioning to impact a significant portion of the country’s population.
“This is a strategic step to expand high-speed digital connectivity at affordable prices across Java to Papua and Maluku with maximum efficiency,” affirmed Yune Marketatmo, President Director of Surge, in an official statement on Thursday, October 16, emphasizing the dual objectives of widespread access and operational effectiveness.
For prospective users in the connected regions of Java, Maluku, and Papua who are interested in subscribing to Internet Rakyat, pre-registration is now open. Individuals can complete the pre-registration process by visiting the website https://internetrakyat.id/register. Required information includes their name, an active WhatsApp mobile number, email address, and detailed residential address to facilitate seamless onboarding to this transformative new service.
