ShopeePay QRIS: Ride TransJakarta, MRT, and KRL Easier Without a Card!

ShopeePay has officially partnered with Bank Indonesia (BI) to introduce QRIS Tap across five key public transportation modes: TransJakarta BRT and non-BRT, LRT, MRT, and KRL Commuter Line. This collaboration marks a significant step towards enhancing the convenience of urban travel for millions of Indonesians.

“Every engagement with Bank Indonesia reinforces our commitment to supporting such collaborations. Through QRIS Tap, we aim to significantly ease public access to transportation,” stated Eka Nilam Dari, President Director of ShopeePay Indonesia. She made these remarks during the ‘11.11 Serba Hemat’ press conference held in Jakarta on Thursday, November 6.

Nilam Dari, affectionately known as Lala, further emphasized the growing trend of digital transactions among Indonesian society. “It’s imperative that we evolve to support this digital transformation,” she added, highlighting ShopeePay’s dedication to meeting contemporary consumer needs.

Bank Indonesia officially launched the QRIS Tap In and Out feature for the five aforementioned transportation modes — KRL Commuter Line, MRT Jakarta, LRT, TransJakarta BRT, and non-BRT — just last week, on October 31. This initiative aims to streamline the public transportation experience nationwide.

With the innovative QRIS Tap In-Tap Out system integrated into mobile phones, commuters can now bid farewell to traditional electronic money cards. Bank Indonesia proudly announced on its official website that “the tapping process boasts remarkable speed, completing a single transaction in approximately 0.3 seconds,” ensuring a swift and seamless journey.

This advanced speed represents a substantial improvement over previous QRIS generations, which typically necessitated QR code scanning or the use of chip-based cards. The new tap-and-go technology offers a more efficient and user-friendly payment solution.

Transportation Modes Supporting QRIS Tap In-Tap Out

The QRIS Tap In-Tap Out system is now available across a growing network of public transportation, including:

  • KRL Commuter Line: Accessible at 83 stations throughout the Jakarta, Bogor, Depok, Tangerang, and Bekasi (Jabodetabek) areas, as well as 17 stations in Yogyakarta.
  • MRT Jakarta
  • LRT Jakarta and LRT Jabodebek: These modern transportation systems were meticulously designed from their inception to support advanced digital payment solutions, including the intuitive tap-based QRIS system.
  • TransJakarta Non-BRT (Bus Rapid Transit): The QRIS-based Tap On Bus feature is undergoing a phased implementation. Consequently, passengers may encounter some locations where QRIS Tap In-Tap Out is not yet fully operational during this gradual rollout.
  • TransJakarta BRT corridors: The adoption of QRIS Tap In-Tap Out is also being progressively implemented across this vital public transport network.
  • Various other bus services, including DAMRI, and urban transportation in 13 provinces have already successfully integrated QRIS Tap for payments.

How to Use QRIS Tap for TransJakarta, MRT, and Other Public Transport

Utilizing QRIS Tap for your daily commute is straightforward:

  • Ensure the NFC feature on your mobile phone is activated.
  • Open your preferred mobile banking or payment application that supports QRIS Tap.
  • Navigate to and select the QRIS menu.
  • Choose the specific QRIS TAP feature.
  • Select the desired source of funds for your transaction.
  • Enter your transaction PIN if the application prompts for it.
  • Tap your phone on the designated “tap in” machine upon entering and the “tap out” machine upon exiting LRT, MRT, KRL, or TransJakarta. Your balance will be automatically deducted based on the distance traveled.
  • Wait for the successful transaction notification to appear on your screen.

Each transportation operator has equipped its respective modes with dedicated tap machines, ensuring system compatibility and smooth operations.

It is important to note that iPhone users currently cannot access QRIS Tap In-Tap Out services. This limitation stems from Apple’s NFC system, which remains proprietary and restricted to non-Apple Pay payment applications.

Bank Indonesia initiated pilot programs for QRIS Tap in transportation services as early as March. Initially, this system was exclusively implemented on MRT Jakarta, offering a single fare for the route connecting Bundaran HI Station and Lebak Bulus Station. Furthermore, a portion of the TransJakarta Royaltrans fleet has also successfully completed trials for the QRIS Tap payment system, paving the way for wider adoption.

ShopeePay QRIS: Expanding Reach to Thailand, Singapore, and Beyond

Beyond domestic public transport, ShopeePay is collaborating with Bank Indonesia to enable cross-border QRIS usage. This strategic partnership significantly broadens ShopeePay’s institutional collaborations, extending far beyond the scope of QRIS Tap for local transit.

Lala announced, “ShopeePay users can now conveniently utilize cross-border QRIS. Our service is currently available in Thailand, Japan, Malaysia, and Singapore, with plans to expand into South Korea in the near future.” This underscores the growing interoperability of Indonesia’s QRIS system.

Bank Indonesia has been actively piloting cross-border QRIS usage in Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore, and Japan. The central bank is also diligently exploring potential collaborations with several other nations, including South Korea, India, the United Arab Emirates, and Saudi Arabia, aiming to establish a truly interconnected digital payment ecosystem.
